Full Figured Fashion Week – The Model Competition Is Fierce!

Being a model is every little girls dream; I’m sure we have all seen little girls walking the “runway” in their family living room or looking in the mirror posing. Last night, those dreams came true for ten lucky girls. While there was only one winner, they all experienced an evening of their dreams as they walked the runway in beautiful outfits to a very supportive crowd.

Club BLVD hosted evening number two of Full Figured Fashion Week .Gwen DeVoe began the show by introducing the host for the evening, Ruschell Boone. Ruschell is a reporter for NY 1 and a curvy diva herself. We were first introduced to the ladies in a t-shirt and denim segment. Each contestant would show their personal style by taking a Full Figured & Fabulous t-shirt and creatively styling it.

Next, Gwen thanked the evening’s sponsors, which included Sonsi, Just My Size, TJ Max/Marshalls and Lane Bryant. Our next chance to view the ladies came when they walked the runway in looks they had chosen for themselves. These looks would show us the “trend” each contestant believed was most flattering for themselves while showing how well they could walk the runway.

The crowd was hyped as they clapped and shouted for their favorite contestant. The looks varied from “Ultra Glam” to “Chic and Trendy”.

The Glamazons performed two songs (available on itunes); and was a real treat for those that had never seen them perform live. This burlesque trio of plus size women  sing, dance and help to empower their fans. It was clear the audience was loving them, as even those in the photography area were moving and bopping to the beats.

The last segment was the eveningwear competition, and this is when the race for “number one” really became close. Up to this point there was five girls that could have won the title, so this segment was key to who would take the title. There were sequined gowns, colorful body conscious layered gowns and some designs that were clearly one of a kind.

After a brief intermission, which allowed the judges to decide on the winner, we were presented with the announcement from two of the shows producers, Tonya Giddens and Myisha Hill. Contestant number 3, was announced the winner of a $1,000 cash prize and two VIP tickets to the finale event on Saturday evening. MJ was a crowd favorite and is a NY native.  Congratulations MJ!

After I greeted some of the guests, such as the face of Full Figured Fashion Week, Rosie Mercado, The Curvy Fashionista – Marie Denee and Daily Venus Diva’s Stephanie Dansworth I made my way to the back stage area where the contestants were busy packing their bags. One by one I introduced myself and congratulated them, it takes a confident woman to walk the runway in a competition. While there was a time when plus size women feared walking down the street because of ridicule, we now have platforms where curves are celebrated. Each woman last night was a winner!

Again, I would like to thank Lane Bryant for giving me the opportunity to share Full Figured Fashion Week with those that could not make it. Today I will be part of the panel, at the Hotel Pennsylvania, for the Aspiring Models and The State of The Curvy Community. It’s going to be a lot of fun! For more information visit www.fffweek.com
