Beth Ditto, the plus size lead singer of the group Gossip and a favorite of Jean Paul Gaultier has another notch to add to her fashion belt, a limited edition collaboration with make-up giant MAC Cosmetics.

WWD announced today that the limited edition line is due to hit the masses in June. It is not yet known what products will be a part of the line but it is clear that it will reflect Ditto’s bold beauty style.

Once a forensic science major with aspirations in the law enforcement field, Griselangel Paula came onto the plus size modeling scene with a dream.

Today, she is capturing the attention of some major players in the plus size game and dazzling the rest of us with her charming personality and plus size talent.

Shannon: Your name, Griselangel Paula, is it difficult for people to pronounce? Do you have a nickname that you prefer people call you?

Griselangel: (Laughs) I think my name is more intimidating than it is hard. If you sound it out its really quite easy, Gri-Se-Lan-Gel; but yes, my friends call me G.

Shannon: Where did you go to high school and college? What was your major? Did you enjoy school?

Griselangel: I went to the Professional Performing Arts High School. I went to High school as a Drama Major. I always wanted to be an actress. However, somewhere along the way I decided it wasn’t practical to go to college for drama and wanted (what I thought at the time) was a more secure major. I decided to take on criminal justice; it wasn’t long until I completely fell in love with the subject. At that point, all I wanted to do was to become a cop and to one day have my dream job of working for ICE investigating human trafficking cases. As of this day I am on the waiting list for the NYPD.

Shannon: What’s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Griselangel: During my spare time I love being in my couch watching random Netflix movies.

Shannon: How long have you been modeling and how did you get started?

Griselangel: I started modeling in 2008. A few months in, I booked a six page spread with Ebony Magazine. After that, I thought things would somehow get on the fast track; however, you soon realize in this industry that it takes a long time for people to start recognizing your work and to get bookings.

Shannon: Which size are you? Who are you represented by?

Griselangel: I am a size 14. I am represented by Dorothy Combs Models, as well as Heffner Model Management in Seattle.

Shannon: How long did it take you to become a successful model? What’s your definition of success as a model?

Griselangel: That’s a very interesting question. Everyone measures success differently and personally, as of this day I don’t consider myself a successful model. I consider a successful model a girl that has been modeling full0time for years. Someone who can evolve within the industry. I think I have been peeking through the door of this industry, but I’m not as far in as I one day dream to be.

Shannon: I feel like we’ve had the pleasure at PLUS Model Magazine of watching you grow by leaps and bounds in 2011. Do you feel like this has been your most successful year modeling thus far?

Griselangel: Definitely! I have had the most amazing opportunities this year to work with some amazing clients! I feel like this year I have worked on the foundation for the years to come and I pray clients will continue to recognize my work. PLUS Model Magazine has been so supportive of me, and I am so thankful for your continued support.

Plus Size Bodies, What Is Wrong With Them Anyway?

In the January 2012 issue of PLUS Model Magazine, plus-size model Katya Zharkova is featured in an explosive editorial where thought provoking statistics and statements are revealed.

- Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less.

- Ten years ago plus-size models averaged between size 12 and 18. Today the need for size diversity within the plus-size modeling industry continues to be questioned. The majority of plus-size models on agency boards are between a size 6 and 14, while the customers continue to express their dissatisfaction.

- Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.

- 50% of women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller.

If we continue to ignore and rely on others to decide what we want to see, change will never happen. We have to be vocal and proactive, patient and realistic.

Tips on how we can help create change:

- Support the companies who market to you.
- Use social networking sites and email to let brands and designers know how you feel about clothing, options and the use of straight sized models (thin models) to market to you.
- Your dollars count! If you stop buying at “Store A” and let them know you will not be purchasing clothing until they market to you, this will raise concern.
- Use every avenue and opportunity you have available to you for your voice to be heard.
- Indie designers need our support.

The answer to the question is this, there is nothing wrong with our bodies. We are bombarded with weight-loss ads every single day, multiple times a day because it’s a multi-billion dollar industry that preys on the fear of being fat. Not everyone is meant to be skinny, our bodies are beautiful and we are not talking about health here because not every skinny person is healthy.

What we desire is equality to shop and have fashion options just like smaller women. Small women cannot be marketed to with pictures of plus-size women, why are we expected to respond to pictures of small size 6 and 8 women? We don’t!When the plus size modeling industry began, the models ranged in size from 14 to 18/20, and as customers we long for those days when we identify with the models and feel happy about shopping.

Are we moving towards that goal? Are you being marketed effectively by the brands who want your dollars?

Iris Apfel for MAC Cosmetics

New York native and fashion icon, Iris Apfel is the new face for MAC Cosmetics.

As a young woman Iris worked for Women’s Wear Daily and for interior designer Elinor Johnson. She also was an assistant to illustrator Robert Goodman. Iris Apfel took part in many design restoration projects, including work at the White House for nine presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton.

In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City premiered an exhibition about the fashionable style of Iris Apfel entitled Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel. The success of the exhibit was profound that planted the seed for traveling versions of the exhibit displayed at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach;the Nassau County Museum in Nassau County, New York; and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach is in the conceptual phase of a 93,000 square feet (8,600 m²) new building that will include a dedicated gallery for the clothes, accessories and furnishings of Iris Apfel.

Iris Apfel still consults, and also lectures about style and other fashion topics.
