Bare Necessities Launches Plus Size Lingerie Website

BarePlus by Bare Necessities to offer more than 1000 styles from 81 designer brands

EDISON, NJ (Feb. 10 2012): Bare Necessities, the leading online retailer of brand name intimate apparel, today launched a new online boutique designed specifically for curvy women called BarePlus by Bare Necessities.

BarePlus by Bare Necessities will feature more than 500 bras that fit sizes 38A – 56J, including everyday bras, sports bras, and sexy bra and panty sets. The website, www.bareplus.com, will offer more than 1,000 styles of plus size lingerie, hosiery and swimwear, from 81 brands including Elomi, SPANX, Bali, Wacoal, Hanky Panky, and Calvin Klein.

“The launch of BarePlus reinforces our commitment to serving the woman with curves,” said Jay Dunn, Chief Marketing Officer for Bare Necessities. “The launch marks the beginning of our effort to build the best shopping experience for curvy women. Over the next several months, you’ll see more features, photography representative of our customer, and exciting new products from the world’s best brands that you won’t find anywhere else.”

BarePlus marks the first major effort executed by Dunn since joining Bare Necessities in 2010 as its first Chief Marketing Officer. Dunn came from Lane Bryant, where he had been the mastermind behind the landmark “Red Bra” ad campaign. The advertisement, which ran on American Idol, featured a plus size model flaunting a sexy red bra and panty set and became a national sensation after it was initially banned by both ABC and Fox for showing too much cleavage. The controversy ignited a national debate regarding how curvy women are portrayed in the media.

bareplus.com and barenecessities.com will coexist in a tabbed shopping environment, all with a shared shopping cart and checkout process. Shoppers clicking on the BarePlus tab will see items available exclusively in plus sizes, with navigation and imagery tailored to the plus size product assortment.

The company will announce the launch of bareplus.com at a press conference today at Lavo, in midtown Manhattan, and will celebrate the launch with a contest on its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/bareplus.

Beautiful plus size clothing modeled by plus size models, what a novel idea! It makes perfect sense to PLUS Model Magazine and thousands of women, and apparently plus size brand Pennington’s also agrees. This brand is leading the way in marketing to the plus size woman. Plus size women continually ask for aspirational images; all women want to feel happy when they are shopping whether they are a size 0 or 28, and why not? Why shouldn’t our shopping experience be one that we enjoy?

We are delighted with Pennington’s fashion for every day women and for showing us that size diversity is beautiful.

Part 3: What YOUR Agent Expects from YOUOne of the biggest misconceptions in the plus size modeling industry today is the belief that once you secure an agent – it’s all “gravy” from there, you don’t have to do anything but sit back and the work will just begin to pour in. Well anyone who has been in this situation learns quickly that this is most certainly NOT what happens, if anything you will have to work even harder once you sign on the dotted line.

Many models come to me with preconceived notions of what we are supposed to do for you as “Your Agent” but what you really need to understand is this: There are certain things that are expected from YOU “The Model” when you sign on the dotted line with an agent or agency. And unless you have a clear cut understanding of what those expectations are…your career will quickly begin to feel like you are on a treadmill….Working hard but getting no where. So in an effort to prevent you from being on that treadmill; I put together a list of some of the things that your agent/booker will expect of you as an aspiring model if they decide to bring you on as a client.

Your Agent/Booker Expects:

For YOU to be groomed – At all times! - I have held and participated in enough model castings to be absolutely horrified at the way some aspiring models choose to show up at castings and open calls. I have watched more women come through my office in ill fitting clothing, hair a mess, with no makeup on and/or dressed more provocatively then you can imagine.

Aspiring models, I have a question for you: Why on earth would you come to a MODELING agency NOT looking your ABSOLUTE BEST??

And then expect me to cut you a break and sign you anyway??? Agents perk up when they get a chick that comes through their doors well groomed, well spoken and fashion forward (Note: I said fashion forward – NOT trendy). That means that’s less work that THEY have to do and MORE clients they can send you to see. Clients love to see beautiful women walk through their doors, they don’t want to see women whose hard lives show on their faces. It is imperative that you look your absolute best when you go on an audition or a casting. If you don’t wear make up everyday, at the very least keep your “face” (powder, mascara & lip gloss) in your bag at all times, so that when that last minute call for an audition comes, becoming “camera ready” is only a bathroom away.

For YOU to be proactive & enthusiastic about YOUR career – Agents/Bookers LOVE models who are “hungry” and focused about their careers. If you don’t want to fall through the cracks and be forgotten by your agent/booker (and yes, this DOES happen), then you need call or send an email and check in with your agent at MINIMUM once a week, to “see if anything’s happening”. And know that a lot of those times, there won’t be anything happening at the moment but this simple action keeps you fresh in your booker’s mind and it shows that you are taking an interest in your career rather than sitting home waiting for the phone to ring.

You’ve heard of J. Alexander, but have you heard of Alva Page? Alva is an accomplished runway coach who specializes in training plus size models (how refreshing is that?). In this series “10 Questions” let’s meet the man who has coined 2008 as “the year of the walk”.

He helped train would-be plus size models how to walk the runway with style, grace, poise and the grandeur that is needed to showcase each designer’s collection.

[Tonya] Thank you so much for taking time out from your schedule to chat with me. Tell the readers about your background?

[Alva] I am Alva Page, a former aspiring actor-turned model and now a Runway/Model Coach. I have been in the beauty and fashion industry for over 10 years. I help train would-be models how to walk the runway with style, grace, poise and the grandeur that is needed to showcase each designer’s collection.

[Tonya] Were you surrounded by plus size women growing up?

[Alva] Yes I was; my paternal grandmother was a plus size woman as well as grand aunts and my cousins. Being around plus size or as it’s known, “size sexy” woman is nothing new to me.

[Tonya] What made you decide to become a runway trainer?

[Alva] I never thought about being a Runway/Model Coach, I always wanted to be an actor. I was told by a program director that I should model, so I started investing in modeling workshops and it was during those workshops that I met Martin Snaric who gave me the “a-ha” moment. I went back to college at St. Augustine’s where we had a modeling troupe on campus. Two of the potential models didn’t get the routine down so I stepped in and taught them what I learned from the workshops and that’s how I started. Over the years I have perfected my craft and it’s led to doing what I do now with most new clients coming in through referrals.

[Tonya] Who are some of your influences in this industry called fashion?

[Alva] Which decade? During the 60′s and the early 70′s, that was the era of the runway models like Bethann Hardison and Bilie Blair, who broke barriers on the runway for women of color. The 80′s introduced us to Debra Shaw, who devastated the couture runways with her chameleonic poses and of course in the 90′s the Supermodel era with Naomi, Linda, Claudia, Christy, and Cindy. These gorgeous creatures became stronger by being a very close knit family. They became the most powerful faces on the runway, picking and choosing which shows they wanted to do. My biggest male influence is Andre Leon Talley; he defied all the odds of the fashion industry. He has something no other African American man at that time had achieved, which was obtaining first hand knowledge from the very extraordinary Diana Vreeland (former editor in chief of Vogue magazine). He was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge from the most prominent women and men in the industry.

[Tonya] You had the distinction of being the runway trainer for BET’s first Rip The Runway Fashion Showcase, in which the fashions of plus sizes was the most popular segment. What was that experience like?

Sorella Swim came on the scene and truly impressed the plus size industry with it’s sophisticated collection of swimwear. Last week Sorella Swim announced they are looking for a few fresh faces. We caught up with Jessica Peterson, owner of Sorella Swim to ask her a few questions we have been asked my model hopefuls about the model search.

When does the Sorella Swim model search end?
The deadline to submit your application to Sorella Swim is February 15th, 2012.

Can both agency signed and unsigned models apply?
Yes. However, it is stated in the eligibility rules that any model entering into the contest understands that she is entering free of representation. Sorella Swim will not be booking through any agencies for this contest.

What type of photos are the applicants required to submit?
The contest requires each applicant submit 3-5 photos. One photo must be a close-up headshot and one must be a full body photo. All other photos submitted are of the applicant’s choice.

What type of pictures are you looking for?
This season Sorella Swim is doing something a little different. Instead of doing the typical swimwear photo shoot by the pool or at the beach we are going for something a little more aspirational, trendy and fashion-forward. We plan on several mini shoots at different locations where each model can fall into a different storyline and atmosphere. The photos will be sultry, and romantic!

What does a Sorella Swim model posses?
This is a wonderful question! A Sorella Swim model possesses confidence, sophistication and style. The ideal model for Sorella Swim is proud of her curves, has found comfort within her own body and has the desire to show off her curves with style & class.

When will the winners be announced?
Finalists will be chosen and contacted directly to attend a live casting/interview with me (the owner of Sorella Swim) by February 20th. After all finalists have been interviewed the two winners will be announced on facebook on February 27th, 2012.
