TV One’s Illegal Use of Plus Size Comedienne Erica Watson Photo Causes Big Stir!

Our very dear friend and plus size comedienne Erica Watson is the latest victim of size-ism. TV One’s new show Love That Girl, took actress Tatyana Ali’s head and placed it on Erica Watson’s body as a BEFORE picture. Erica’s picture was used by TV One without her permission for this show, and there has been no apology to Erica at the time of this post.

The use of the picture was brought to Erica’s attention by her fans who phoned and emailed her. The amount of blogs and support for Erica has risen throughout the day and we imagine this will take a force of it’s own once more media get’s a hold of the story.

PLUS Model Magazine is asking EVERYONE to go on TV One’s Facebook Page and Twitter and ask them to publicly apologize to Erica Watson and all plus size women for that matter. This is an outrage and something we should not let slip under the rug.

Dear Mia,

When I was broke and needed clothes for a movie premiere, who called every designer she knew to make sure I looked good on the red carpet? YOU! When I was ready to give up during boot camp, who called me everyday to encourage me to get up and get moving? YOU. Whenever I needed someone to listen to me about my day-to-day struggles as a plus size woman in the entertainment industry, who was there to give me encouragement and let me cry? YOU.

When I look at my life, so many of the special moments were shared with YOU. Thank you for being one of my biggest supporters and an amazing friend. Although my heart is broken, as long as it beats I will always love you Mia Amber!

PLUS Model Radio Celebrates 2 Years, Launches New Website, and Welcomes New Contributors!

Los Angeles, CA – February 18, 2010 – PLUS Model Radio with host Chenese Lewis, the #1 podcast for plus size women, which premiered March 17, 2008 is celebrating its two year anniversary! In two years the show has had amazing guests, tons of valuable information, a consistently growing fan base, and has the entire plus industry tuning in faithfully. In celebration of PLUS Model Radio’s anniversary a new website for the internet radio show will be launched March 1st, 2010, as well as a theme song contest, and exciting new additions to the show.

The newly designed website for PLUS Model Radio goes live Monday, March 1st, 2010. PLUS Model Radio aims to extend the reach of the show by serving a broad audience of listeners interested in entertainment, modeling, fashion, size acceptance, and philanthropy. The new website features expanded content and streaming media including over 50 episodes related to the plus industry in the permanent archives. The website will give the audience a place to not only listen to the show, but also have valuable show information and resources at their finger tips. PLUS Model Radio will also introduce new contributors to the show that will keep the listeners informed with the latest news in the plus industry. The new contributors include: Madeline Figueroa-Jones, editor of PLUS Model Magazine and co creator of the PLUS Size Industry Professionals website. Sage Salzer, plus supermodel who has been featured in print campaigns for Curvation, Fruit of the Loom, Lane Bryant and in-store posters can be seen regularly at Catherine’s, Fashion Bug, Kohl’s, Target, and Walmart. Erica Watson, actress, stand-up comedian, and film/television director who in 2009 appeared in the Lee Daniels film “Precious,” and is currently touring around the country with her one woman show “Fat Bitch” and Aimee Cheshire, former plus size model turned blogger and creator of MadisonPlus.com, the premier fashion site for the modern plus size woman.

In celebration of the two year anniversary PLUS Model Radio will also hold a theme song contest encouraging artists to write an original theme song for the show which is a great opportunity to for an up and coming artist to gain exposure within the plus community. Erica Watson – “big, bold and beautiful” actor, comedian, director and commentator for the Oxygen Network and BET – returns to her hometown Chicago with the solo show “Fat Bitch!” This five-night only run is a funny yet thought-provoking look at how society’s obsession with weight, race and class have formed the way the world views her shape, and includes her interactions with men, from the boardroom to the bedroom. Written and performed by Watson as a hybrid of theatre and stand-up, “Fat Bitch!” explores how black women and their bodies have always been subjected to admiration and ridicule, and shares images of “Mammy” and “Hottentot Venus.” The production runs about 90 minutes without intermission, and is for ages 18 and up (some limited profanity in show).

Through personal vignettes, anecdotes and video clips, “Fat Bitch!” also offers a humorous and honest glimpse at the American “fat and sassy” black woman stereotype. How these media images have impacted Watson’s self-esteem are covered – from PETA’s recent “Save the Whales” billboard campaign aimed at overweight women, to the current national “war on obesity” and the recent controversy surrounding President Obama’s nomination of a plus-sized black woman for Surgeon General. Watson is a Columbia College Chicago graduate, with a BA in Film and TV (1998), and a MA in Media Management (2005).

Influenced by the quick wit of Whoopi Goldberg, the blunt comedic observations of Wanda Sykes, and the larger-than-life confidence of Mo’Nique, Watson (who is in the upcoming film “Precious” with Mo’Nique, as well as 2006’s “Dirty Laundry” with Loretta Devine) creates a universal point of view yet offers a new voice in comedy. “Fat Bitch!” has been workshopped at New York’s “The Tank;” first during the Black Comedy Experiment in March 2008, then in May 2009, and a pre-Chicago run from October 7-10, 2009.

“Fat Bitch!” is being produced by NBA champion, Charlotte Bobcats Center, and Chicago native Nazr Mohammed, who Watson has known since elementary school, when they lived next door in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood (blocks from President Obama’s house). Autographed sports memorabilia from Mohammed (to be announced later; likely to include apparel and Bulls/Bobcats tickets) will be raffled off at each of the five “Fat Bitch!” shows to benefit organizations dealing with young people and self-esteem.
