Full Figured Fashion Week™ endeavors to support ALL curvy women, not just those who are booked to walk our runway. Therefore, we are pleased to announce the return of our “Face of Full Figured Fashion Week™” Cover Model Search. The contest will end at 11:59PM on Friday, March 2, 2012. The winner will be announced on Friday, March 23, 2012.

Here’s How to Enter:

Eligibility Requirements:

Contestants must be at least 18 years old
Contestants must live within the U.S.
Contestant must wear a dress size 14 and above

Submission Requirements:

To enter the Model Search, contestants must submit:

An online application
A professional headshot in high resolution (photo should be a maximum 5 MB in size and in JPG, PSD, PNG, or GIF formats)
A short video explaining why YOU should be chosen as the Face of Full Figured Fashion Week. Video should be uploaded to www.youtube.com. Once you upload your video, send us the link in the space provided on the application form
A $35 application fee via Pay Pal.

Judging Process

1. A panel of 4 judges from the plus size industry will select the winner based on their photo AND their video.
2. Since this contest is a search for our event’s Cover Model, whose responsibility will include hosting the red carpet event at the finale event on Saturday, June 16th, our judges will be scoring in the following areas:

a. The picture submitted by the contestant (cover model ready)
b. How well the contestant presents herself in her video submission (on camera personality, able to speak properly, etc.)

3. The contest will end at 11:59PM at Friday, March 2, 2012.
4. The winner will be announced on Friday, March 23, 2012.

Prizes:

Cover Model winner will receive:

One round trip airline ticket to NYC (hotel not included). Winner MUST be able to be in NYC by Friday, June 15th or earlier.
Two VIP, all access passes to all public FFFWeek events
An opportunity to host the red carpet VIP reception at the finale runway showcase on Saturday, June 16th
Photograph, video and bio will be placed on the event’s website for 6 months (or until the 2012 contest begins)
Photograph will be placed on marketing and media items for the event.

Contest Rules and Regulations:

Submission of photos, the video, and the application fee to this contest means that you agree to the following:

I am at least 18 years of age and live within the United States
It is understood that the winner will be chosen by the panel of judges. The judges’ decision will be final.
If winner is unable to attend event after airline ticket has been purchased, winner will be responsible for reimbursing Full Figured Fashion Weekâ„¢ for the entire amount of the ticket purchase no later than 60 days after the event
Hotel accommodations are NOT included in prize list
Contest winner will be required to sign a letter of agreement before airline tickets and prizes are awarded
We reserve the right to disqualify contestants who exhibit unsportsmanlike behavior via social networks during the competition process. Your money will be refunded and your image will be removed.

Full Figured Fashion Week Model Registration Now Open

Full Figured Fashion Week™is looking for experienced runway models for its New York City shows & events during the month of June 2012. The deadline to submit is Friday, February 24, 2012.

What are the requirements?

Minimum height- 5’7″ without heels (if you are a plus petite model, you are encouraged to submit but your weight MUST be proportionate to your height. First consideration will be given to models who are at least 5’7″)
Dress sizes between – 14-22
Runway experience is mandatory
Able to attend at least one fitting in New York City (fittings will be scheduled approximately 2-3 weeks before the show)
If you live outside of the state of New York, you must submit a video clip of your runway ability to us via YouTube.com. See video submission instructions below.

How Do You Apply? (All Models)

Models must submit 2-3 photos MAXIMUM (One photo MUST be a head shot and the other a FULL body shot)
Photos must be no larger than 5 megabytes.
Please make sure your photographs are CLEAR, IN FOCUS, PROPERLY ROTATED and your face is free of accessories/obstructions (i.e. sunglasses, body paint etc) in your photos.
Submitted photographs must be NO OLDER than ONE year old.
Please make sure that YOU are the ONLY person in the photographs you submit.
Self Portraits & Photographs taken from camera phones are not acceptable.
We will only contact those with whom there is an interest.

Out of State Models (Please Read Carefully)

1. Mandatory Video Submission – In an attempt to further reduce cost, models who reside out of the state of New York are required to submit a video clip of your runway ability when you submit your application below. So, that means you must submit your two photos (see above), a video and your application to be considered.

2. You should upload your video clip to www.YouTube.com and send us the URL to the YouTube.com page in the space provided on the application below. If you indicate that you live out of the state of New York but do not send us a link attached to your application, your submission will be voided upon receipt.

Tips for Submitting Your Video:

Please keep your video short and to the point (no longer than 3-5 minutes in length).
Please make sure that you are THE ONLY person in the video you submit.
Please check the lighting on your camera and make sure that your video is well lit.
Please make sure that your cameraperson pans up & down and captures your entire body in the frame as you are walking.
Please make sure that your video captures you walking both towards and away from the camera

3. Transportation and lodging – While we want to give everyone an opportunity to participate and will consider models who live outside of the city of New York, if you are selected, transportation to the audition and the show will not be reimbursed. We understand that transportation to New York City can be costly and strongly urge you to consider this before making the commitment to participate in this event.

Note to ALL NYC and Local Models:

There will be a closed casting (date TBA). Only those models with which there is an interest will be notified of the date and location of the casting.
There will also be a 3-hour runway intensive rehearsal prior to the show to tighten up your runway walk; attendance at this rehearsal is MANDATORY for participation in the show.

Can plus-size and high-end designer fashion meet in the middle?

Pardon the pun, but New York’s Full Figured Fashion Week has doubled in size and shows no sizes of shrinking.

The organizers of last weekend’s event are celebrating, and plus-size models are rejoicing, yet mass opinion probably will remain mixed for years to come.

This is the third year that former plus-size model Gwen DeVoe has produced the show, which featured 15 designers from the United States, Canada and Europe. In interviews with various media outlets, she’s said she was inspired to launch the event because prestigious New York Fashion Week designers weren’t creating clothing for women like her.

Full Figured Fashion Week showcases models with dress sizes that start in the double digits and clothes that fit women who wear sizes into the 30s. This makes a sharp visual contrast to typical size zero to 2 runway models, who tend to be improbably tall and thin.

DeVoe has said that she intends to show designers the plus-size market that they are missing out on. Statistics continue to document the widening waistline of the U.S. population, making her focus on full-figured fashions even more relevant.

The controversy, of course, is that many people believe that celebrating large-size women, many of them obese, will encourage them to continue tipping the scales.

Phyllis Brasch Librach of Sydney’s Closet in Maryland Heights sells special-occasion clothing from size 14 to size 44, and she has no qualms about the service she provides. In fact, she proudly waves the plus-size flag. On her website, she declares that the majority of women are larger than a size 12.

And each of those women, she writes, ‘should be able to find a dress for a special occasion that makes her look — and feel — as glamorous as a movie star.” Who’s to say we should discourage that?

The irony in the condemnation of the plus-size shows is that typical runways have been vilified for encouraging women to starve themselves into a low ideal weight.

The truth is probably less black and white. Women whose self-esteem is based on an image in a magazine have bigger problems than what to wear.

Webster Groves boutique owner Natalie Woods of Daisy Clover said that people “have to learn to take responsibility for their choices.” She said she’d never be a size 2 because she hates to exercise and enjoys fried foods, but that doesn’t mean she gets to blame lithe models. She said that most of her business is equally distributed between size extra-smalls and extra-larges.

With that in mind, she greeted news of the new fashion week with a shrug.

In contrast, outspoken plus-size model Fluvia Lacerda, who was named plus-size commercial model of the year at Full Figured Fashion Week, issued a rant (her words) on her blog about why plus-size or curvy fashion needs more respect.

She wrote: “Although it might sound astonishing for some, looking GOOD doesn’t necessarily equate to looking THIN/SMALLER to a lot of us plus size women. Curves aren’t an embarrassment that we need to wear pieces to disguise ‘em or use accessories to divert people’s attention from noticing my wide hips. They are there and I find no reason to disguise them (I probably wouldn’t be able to even if I tried, LOL).”

I know the kind of vitriolic condemnations many of you are thinking in response. You’re not wrong, but neither is Lacerda. The question of how big is too big is valid, but I can’t condone the idea that we should teach women, men, children to be ashamed of their size. Health should prevail, and I’m betting that Lacerda hits the gym more than most of us.

What drives me crazy in the plus-size vs. ectomorph argument is that women who are in the middle weight classes are ignored. Instead, we choose sides and everyone typically heaps undue blame on a group of women who are usually and naturally thin.

Where’s the middle ground? I wonder. What’s so unappealing about sizes 8 to 12. Seriously.

Those sizes are in a no-man’s land as far as the fashion world is concerned. Someone in the middle is not large enough to be plus-size or small enough to be a traditional model. Yet she’s most likely to have an acceptable body mass index and, therefore, is probably eating relatively balanced meals. I’m guessing some will argue that fashion is about fantasy and that’s best embodied by extremes, not the average.

Still, it seems odd that no one champions the women in the middle, when common sense should tell us that that’s not a bad place to start.

Full Figured Fashion Week in New York City Shows Off The Talent of Plus-size Designers

The fashion world is about to be thrown a curve ball.

For three days starting on June 16, the catwalks will be filled with models showing off the styles from the premier designers from all over the world who specialize in flattering the figures of women over a size 12.

The third annual Full Figured Fashion Week is all about the sizes that are largely ignored by the mainstream fashion world and snubbed during the hoopla of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

The interest this year has been overwhelming. Events have sold out, and women are clamoring for tickets to the shows. Gwen Devoe, the organizer of Full Figured Fashion Week, expects over 1,000 people to attend the grand finale showcase.

“It’s been crazy,” said Devoe. “It’s just exploding. Women are finally getting a chance to see fashion come alive on models with bodies they can relate to.”

The event is answering the call from all the plus-size women who want one thing: The same choices in the marketplace that their skinnier sisters get. They want variety and good quality at a fair price.

“Plus-size women in America want fashionable, well-made clothes,” said Devoe. “We have money to spend. and we’re happy to give it to the designers and stores who help us celebrate our curves.”

There are events for buyers, bloggers, models and sponsors as well as sample sales, trunk shows and a shopping crawl for out-of-town fashionistas who want to see what New York City has to offer fuller-figured shoppers.

Sexy swimwear, high-end eveningwear, shoes and cocktail dresses will be on display for women who want a little individuality in their wardrobe and not just to shop at the big department stores.

“A lot of clothing for plus-sized women is just really ugly,” said Rachel Kacenjar, the Cleveland-based designer of Sweetooth Couture. “There’s a lot of business-casual apparel but really not very much for women who want something different or unusual.”

Kacenjar designs for larger-size women with a taste for retro glamour. With an accent on comfortable and flattering fabrics, she creates sexy dresses, skirts and tops that go from the office to the dance floor.

For designers who love what they see on the ready-to-wear runways, the options for plus-sized women can be disheartening.

“I love all the prints that I’ve been seeing on the runways lately,” said Kacenjar. “To be honest, a lot of the prints that end up on plus-sized clothing are just awful.”

Full Figured Fashion Week also gives designers and retailers to meet each other and, hopefully, form new relationships.

For Deb Malkin, owner of the Brooklyn boutique ReDress, it’s a chance for her to meet new designers and purchase their clothing for her shop.

“Plus-sized women’s fashion is virtually ignored by society,” said Malkin. “Full Figured Fashion Week is a chance to pay respect to the creativity in plus-size design.”

Jill Alexander, a Santa-Cruz, Calif.-based designer creates contemporary pieces that are in line with what’s in style but never trendy.

She honed her fashion chops at Ann Taylor, where she learned the value of classic pieces that are always in style.

“I want the women who buy my clothing to love them and keep them in their closets forever,” she said.

Alexander also creates dramatic formal eveningwear that that is sexy, strapless and “anything but mother-of-the-bride.”

She said she hopes women who feel uncomfortable in their clothes feel hopeful after seeing her designs on the runway, modeled by women who look like them.

“I hope these women realize that they can feel beautiful and that there is clothing out there that can make women feel confident,” she said. “It’s really true that putting on the right outfit can help you be your best self.”
