Re/Dress NYC & Lucaspictures — 18PLUS Model Search

Two great plus size fashion forces are teaming up to create a great opportunity for all size 18+ aspiring models/actresses/fashionistas.
Shout to the world you LOVE your curves!

Plus Size Models like Crystal Renn, are the hot new fashion focus these days, gracing the pages of magazines like Glamour and V. These women are beautiful and proving that curvier figures are appealing to both the fashion world and the consumer. However, plus size models aren’t always plus size people, as many models are sizes 8, 10, 12… Two great plus size fashion forces are teaming up to expand on the definitions of “beauty” and “model” with an 18PLUS model search running from Feb 1st through Feb 28th 2010.

Re/Dress NYC is Brooklyn’s own unique style house for women sizes 10 + up. As a singular independent vintage & resale store catering to the curvy set, Re/Dress NYC wanted a model search as unique as itself and so decided to focus on highlighting the power, beauty and style of women sizes 18 and above.

Deb Malkin, owner of Re/Dress NYC says, “We feel that our customer is longing to see women whose bodies mirror their own, dressing in an eye catching, flattering and affirming way. We know our incredibly stylish customers, many of whom are a size 18 and up, are tremendously passionate about fashion, self expression and most importantly about loving themselves. We at Re/Dress NYC want to share their voices and secrets with the world. As we’ve seen with Oscar nominee, Gabourey Sidibe, it’s too rare we get to hear from women who dare to love themselves regardless of size.”

Re/Dress NYC paired up with plus size modeling and photography experts Luke Jones of Lucaspictures and Madeline Figueroa Jones, editor-in-chief of PLUS Model Magazine. The model search asks women to send in their pictures as well as a short essay about they love about their body and 3 pieces of advice they’d give to women who are struggling with self love.

One lucky winner will receive a professional model shoot by Lucaspictures, be featured in PLUS Model Magazine and be the first campaign model for RE/DRESS NYC. There are 2 additional prizes to be won, a headshot shoot and a $100 Gift Certificate to Re/Dress NYC.

Contest Date: February 1st through February 28th, 2010

How to Enter: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Entrants must write a 250 word essay and tell us what you love about your body and what 3 things you would say to someone who’s struggling with self love. Along with your entry please include two jpeg pictures that best represent yourself. Email your entry to modelsearch@redressnyc.com.

There is a $10 non refundable application fee. Model search entries can be made by email to modelsearch@redressnyc.com or women can also enter by visiting the RE/DRESS NYC store on February 20th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, where Luke will be shooting in house and taking applications.

Fee: A $10 processing fee must be paid to paypal@redressnyc.com. at time of entry. Please reference the email address/name that you used for your essay and photo entry. If you’re entering in person on Feb 20th, only cash will be accepted.

Prizes: The Grand Prize winner will be the featured model in the first Re/Dress NYC campaign by Lucaspictures. The featured model will also be featured in 18PLUS at Plus Model Magazine.

Second prize winner will receive a photo shoot with Lucaspictures.

Third prize winner will receive $100 Gift Certificate to Re/Dress NYC.

Expenses: All expenses incurred during the application process is the sole responsibility of the participant. Expenses to and from the campaign photo shoot is the sole responsibility of the winner. Expenses to and from the photo shoot with Lucaspictures is the sole responsibility of the 2nd prize winner.

Winner Notification: Winners will be notified by email.
The winner will be announced on PLUS Model Radio (date to be announced).

Love Your Body Day on October 24th will be a fun and exciting experience for those coming out for the very first time. Let your presentation in front of the judges show how your feeling!

Bring your smile and energy

We know your nerves may play tricks on you but there is nothing to be nervous about. Be yourself and show that you are happy to be at the event and really want to be there.

Don’t overpose when you are asked to pose in front of the camera.

Make simple movements and move after each shot. Practice how to place your hands and feet. Your goal should be to connect with the camera.

PLUS Model Magazine will be hosting its first Model Search at Love Your Body Day in LA on October 24th. Following yesterday, here are some more great model search tips from Rebecca Jennings, President & CEO of Hips and Curves…

What I look for in a model is someone who is totally comfortable in her body. When she puts on a piece of lingerie she commits to the look and makes it happen. When she’s wearing our products she can’t be timid or afraid or concerned about how her stomach, hips, arms – whatever – look. She has to love and accept all of herself – even what she might perceive as her flaws. She doesn’t just put on a piece of lingerie and pose – she lets who she is come through her eyes, her face, her body and the way she moves. She gives 100% of herself and doesn’t withhold anything from the photographer or the camera. She embodies strength and vulnerability.

During a shoot, we give everything we have – and the model has to give everything she has to make it a success. It may seem like a tall order but we don’t expect anyone to embody it perfectly the first time. It can be a great learning experience for someone who may be a little timid but wants to go beyond her comfort zone and grow. If a model can come in and work through the fear and let herself go completely, she will be changed. I’ve seen it happen over and over again. Our models inspire people to be proud of their curves and their sensuality. If you’re curious, excited, confident (or want to be more confident) send us your pics!

Love Your Body Day is always a big success and we are expecting a stellar mix of women, vendors and of course plus size models. PLUS Model Magazine will be hosting its first Model Search in LA on October 24th from 1pm to 4pm. PLUS wants you to succeed and therefore we will continue to give you tips for a successful Model Search!

What should I wear to the model search?

Simple is always best. Jeans and a cute top, skirt and a nice top. Nothing that will hide your body. You want to show your curves without being overly sexy.

What should my makeup be like for the Model Search?

Makeup should be applied with a natural concept in mind. Loud colors or “smokey” eyes will take away from the judges seeing your true beauty.

Dear Readers…

Today’s question is “Why are the age requirements for the PLUS Model Magazine West Coast Model Search 18 to 26?”. Please let me explain: When you run a model contest on your own you can set the standards that you like but when you partner with an agency and a fashion company the requirements have to meet their needs as well. It would not be fair for me to offer the model contest to ages up to 36 yrs old knowing that the probability of the model being chosen as the winner was not likely. With that being said I do encourage models over the age of 26 because we are working on an amazing contest JUST FOR YOU!
