Bare Necessities Launches Plus Size Lingerie Website

BarePlus by Bare Necessities to offer more than 1000 styles from 81 designer brands

EDISON, NJ (Feb. 10 2012): Bare Necessities, the leading online retailer of brand name intimate apparel, today launched a new online boutique designed specifically for curvy women called BarePlus by Bare Necessities.

BarePlus by Bare Necessities will feature more than 500 bras that fit sizes 38A – 56J, including everyday bras, sports bras, and sexy bra and panty sets. The website, www.bareplus.com, will offer more than 1,000 styles of plus size lingerie, hosiery and swimwear, from 81 brands including Elomi, SPANX, Bali, Wacoal, Hanky Panky, and Calvin Klein.

“The launch of BarePlus reinforces our commitment to serving the woman with curves,” said Jay Dunn, Chief Marketing Officer for Bare Necessities. “The launch marks the beginning of our effort to build the best shopping experience for curvy women. Over the next several months, you’ll see more features, photography representative of our customer, and exciting new products from the world’s best brands that you won’t find anywhere else.”

BarePlus marks the first major effort executed by Dunn since joining Bare Necessities in 2010 as its first Chief Marketing Officer. Dunn came from Lane Bryant, where he had been the mastermind behind the landmark “Red Bra” ad campaign. The advertisement, which ran on American Idol, featured a plus size model flaunting a sexy red bra and panty set and became a national sensation after it was initially banned by both ABC and Fox for showing too much cleavage. The controversy ignited a national debate regarding how curvy women are portrayed in the media.

bareplus.com and barenecessities.com will coexist in a tabbed shopping environment, all with a shared shopping cart and checkout process. Shoppers clicking on the BarePlus tab will see items available exclusively in plus sizes, with navigation and imagery tailored to the plus size product assortment.

The company will announce the launch of bareplus.com at a press conference today at Lavo, in midtown Manhattan, and will celebrate the launch with a contest on its Facebook page, www.facebook.com/bareplus.

The Best On Trend Plus Size Lingerie for Valentine 2012

Valentine 2012 saw thoughtful, carefully edited stunning collections reflecting the true needs of the plus size customer. Luxurious, opaque “Wild Orchid” paisley lace replaced sheerness which once ruled. Ruffles and lace were refined by adding ribbons for a soft, romantic effect. Seven Till Midnight offered an exclusive erotic pen and ink print and paired it with eyelash lace with a more structured bodice. I would’ve appreciated more styles to merchandise with this fabric. I love a fashion story, but I still appreciated their bold statement.

Despite a volatile retail environment, vendors produced stronger, well executed pieces in magenta, orchid, and ink in figure flattering silhouettes. I saw a refreshing return to naughty Valentine styles from I-Collection’s lace and fishnet group to Dreamgirl’s Alexander McQueen inspired plaid babydoll adorned with red buckle details and brimming with youthful spirit. One of my favorite Valentine lingerie sets is a longer, lace trimmed cami and matching boyshort. It’s the perfect Valentine dinner date look paired with a cashmere shawl or discreetly concealed under a pinstriped business suit when there’s no time to change on a Tuesday.

Silky, glossy knit fabric from Shirley of Hollywood gave wonderful sizing flexibility to the busty costumer. And, I love seeing navy in its classic glory.

Vintage, timeless looks from Bettie Page to Gypsy Rose Lee provide new inspiration for contemporary plus size lingerie styles so I feel confident we’re coming into our own golden age.

The Paula Deen Debacle

This week Al Roker of the Today show interviewed Paula Deen, aka the “Butter Queen”. A hailstorm of criticism ensued from her admission of her three year old diabetes diagnosis to her endorsement deal to promote a costly drug, Victoza manufactured by Novo Nordisk and laden with as many serious side effects as the fat and sugar Deen is so enamored with. As Eric Webber of Advertising Age said “First, there’s her claim that she waited nearly three years after her diagnosis before going public because knowledge about the disease was limited’. That’s a story with some big stretch marks. She could have completed a medical residency in diabetes in that amount of time. If she was that uninformed, then her doctors are worse that her publicists”.

I love Deen’s big, exuberant personality, but as a passionate foodie, I must admit reducing fat and sugar in a recipe without sacrificing taste is far more challenging than throwing an extra stick of butter into it. I recall a conversation with a Plus Size Plum customer and Savannah resident who dined at Deen’s The Lady and Son’s restaurant where even a healthy side salad is topped with fried onion rings. She said, “I love food, but it was a fat and sugar fest with few healthy choice options”.

Paula Deen is not responsible for our bad food choices. But what I do hold her accountable for is the absurdity her commitment to sacrifice sweet tea to maintain a healthier lifestyle. I don’t know anyone plus size who continues to consume high sugar drinks in favor of calories contained in food! And, I do hold her responsible for sitting on this news. I find it terribly ironic and disingenuous Star Jones defended Deen’s right to confess her diabetes when she felt it was right time. The timing was more based on her closing her lucrative endorsement deal with her drug company than being a force for positive change.

Paula Deen simply personifies the celebrity as a blatant opportunist responding to criticism by pledging an unspecific portion to diabetes only after the media fall out. She’s no different from the celebrity who breaks up a marriage and becomes a human rights advocate to polish up her image. We are constantly being manipulated by celebrities ready to cash in on their Q rating by providing us with inferior quality goods or misinformation. Why are we surprised these celebrities aren’t trained chefs or experienced designers? The Kardashians with their overpriced substandard collection at Sears are a prime example of the narcissistic exploitation that exists today. Not only are we paying higher prices for celebrity licenses, now we can get angry at them for misinforming us, too.
